Day 11: Full day on KI

Day 11: Our one full day on KI

Sunday 20th February

Sunrise down here isn’t until just before 7 am and so we were, indeed, able to see the beautiful early-morning sunrise colours directly from our bed. Mark didn’t go on a bike ride this morning because we had a long day of driving and so we both just went for a quick walk before heading off for the day.

Our first port of call of the day was Seal Bay which was about a 50 minute drive away. The drive was along a straight and flat road and through rather uninteresting territory and so we were glad to have an interesting podcast about Brian Armstrong, the tech entrepreneur who developed CoinBase, to listen to for the journey.
Seal Bay is a protected zone and managed by national parks. Our $28 entry fee was well rewarded, though, as a few of the sea lions put on a bit of a display. Most of them, though, just laid comatose on the beach.

From Seal Bay it was a 20 minute drive further west towards Vivonne Bay. There is a general store at Vivonne Bay which is the last source of food for any travelers heading further westward as all other cafes etc were burnt out with the January 2020 fires. We had thought that we would pick up a sandwich there, for our travels for the rest of the day, but they only ran to burgers and muffins. So it ended up just being a coffee stop before we got underway.

The next stop along the way was Admirals Arch which was about an hours drive through the westward from the Vivonne Bay. This was my most impressive geological structure and there was a huge number of fur seals in this area for added spectacle.

A few kilometres along from Admiral Arch are the Remarkable Rocks; and remarkable they are indeed. It is a huge outcrop of granite perched high upon a headland and you are allowed to walk all over this granite dome, which seems quite sacrilegious. The first thing I noticed was that the granite was exactly the same colour as my disastrous first kitchen. had chosen, what I thought, was a terracotta colored faux granite laminate but it actually turned out to be quite pink, much like granite of the Remarkable Rocks!

From Remarkable Rocks we headed back towards home but via Stokes Bay which was about a 90 minute drive. The cafe seemed to be the main attraction here so as we were tired, we decided to give this a miss and head for home and arrived back at the house by around 3.30 pm.

It was a full day with a lot of kilometres traveled for just a few sight seeing opportunities and and we still haven’t seen a kangaroo. We have an early dinner back at the Ozone Hotel tonight and another big day of travel tomorrow as we head back to the mainland and on to Seacliffe where we will be catching up with Matt and Annabelle. We’re greatly looking forward to their company for the last week of our holiday!

Dinner at the Ozone was just ok but the view from the dining area, and our table, was great!
