Day 15: Back to McLaren Vale

Day 15: Langhorne Creek

Thursday 24th February

It was a very windy morning along the Seacliff coast this morning, a strong southerly was blowing but at least it wasn’t too cold. The boys went on a bike ride for a couple of hours and Annabelle and I battled on along the promenade and met them afterwards for a coffee at the Garden Cafe.
The plan for the day was to have lunch at the Victory Hotel, a highly renowned and popular hotel that was located about 20 minutes down the coast towards McLaren Vale. We decided to book a table in the morning before we departed and it was lucky we did! The place soon filled up but, again, with a strong skew towards the older age set. There was a strong Asian influence in the menu and these items proved to be the best out of the menu options we sampled that is. It was decided that diners would be best advised to choose from the Asian items if ever visiting and dining at the restaurant.
Our early thinking had been that we’d head to Langhorne Creek region, however by the end of lunch our plans changed. We were all a bit tired and the thought of a couple of hours driving to and from Langhorne Creek was soon discarded for a much shorter trip back to McLaren Vale and to some of the vineyards we had missed out on yesterday.
Our first vineyard after lunch was Wirra Wirra Winery as this was just 15 minutes back away. Wirra Wirra has a lovely cellar door experience and and we opted for the premium tasting range but we weren’t all that impressed and so was the first vineyard where we didn’t purchase any wine. After that we made our way to S C Pannel, one that Matt was keen to go to but had been closed yesterday. Although, on the way we had a stop off at Yummy Nuts to purchase the type of almonds we’d had during our wine tasting at Olivers Tarango the day before. The boys and Annabelle were quite keen on these and apparently this nut shop is where they could buy some. However, we ended up buying more confectionery than nuts so go figure. It was then on to S C Pannel which is another lovely vineyard with an outdoor and indoor wine tasting area. We sat outside on the deck looking out over the vineyards, under the shade of a nice umbrella and enjoying a slight breeze. We all tried different wine flights and both couples ended up purchasing a mixed dozen to be sent home.
We were very weary by this stage so it was on home where we had a delicious home cooked meal, thank to our wonderful Matt, and this was enjoyed whilst we watched the glorious sunset from our balcony.
