Day 6: Port Fairy Rest day

Day 6: Port Fairy Rest Day

Tuesday 15th February

It was a beautiful morning as Mark set out on his first ride around Port Fairy and I ventured out for my walk. We’ve been lucky with the weather so far; no rain and lots of sunshine albeit with fair bit of wind thrown in.

I headed out to Griffith’s Island and set the lighthouse as my destination. This was a pretty walk along the Moyne River coast promenade then along the breakwater wall and then the beach to the lighthouse. The only real company I had a part from a few folk fishing were a good number of wallabies.

Mark and I were both back to the house by 9 am and spent a leisurely morning enjoying the view over the river from the comfort of our lovely house that was bathed in beautiful and warm morning sun.

I was tired. Not just ‘I didn’t get enough sleep’ tired but tired from the action packed agenda of the previous 5 days. I put this down to age or being out of practice. We’ve have hardly left the house for much of the last two years due to Covid and this last five days has been more action than we’ve experienced in a long time. So the plan for the day, given my weary state, was to do something in the morning and and then laze in the lovely sun room for the afternoon, reading etc.

The designated activity was a visit to the extinct volcano at Tower Hill, about 15 min back along the road that we came in on yesterday. We found the information board that detailed several different walking tracks and opted for one that was 1.9 km and about of one hour duration. The walk was not at all what we expected though. It was just a walk along a bush track along loose dirt that offered little viewing potential and was so poorly signposted that we ended up doing 3 km and ended up nowhere near where we were meant to be, and for little gain other that sighting a rabbit. I was so filthy when I got back home I had to wash my legs, clothes and shoes. Would I recommend this activity? No, not really, you get a better view of the volcano from the road, as we did later. In fact neither Mark or myself saw anything worthy of a photo; and that is rather telling!

We got back into Port Fairy around lunch time and picked up some supplies before heading home to rest. Rebecca’s Cafe offers a wide range of home cooked meals so we bought the last offering she had for the day; a Sheppard’s Pie, and we’re both looking forward to a night of dining in.

We did head back into town at around 5 pm for Mark to have a beer and found this very cool wine bar, Ministry of Ombibulous Studies, that would have been more at home in New York or even Bondi. It seemed hard to imagine the kind of people we’d seen around town turning up here for a drink; we were the only ones in the place 🙁 One of the beers Mark had was a Darth Vader beer and it came in a really cool can. See below. We only stayed for two beers and then headed home for dinner. We’re both wondering how we’re going to go with a busy schedule over the next 5 days!
