One night in Nambucca Heads

March 29th 2021

Accommodation: RiverView Boutique Motel:  Room 1

Mark and I got away from Byron Bay by about 9 am. We hadn’t eaten breakfast so we stopped about half an hour later in Lennox head at a cafe called Shelter, which is directly across from the beach. It was a lovely setting and we had the best banana bread outside of Bobby’s at Bondi. From there we went straight through to Nambucca Heads and arrived at our accommodation by about 1:30 pm. We were a bit surprised to see how small Nambucca heads is and the relative low key and quiet status of the area; it couldn’t be more different from where we’d just come, Byron Bay, but yet is another coastal town and just separated by a few hours driving.
The description on the front page of the website for the River View Boutique Motel accommodation says ‘stepping back in time’ and they got that part 100% correct. The accommodation was very basic but rather quaint and well appointed. We had a lovely room upstairs, at the corner of the building, overlooking the river and there was lots of good light and a lovely balcony to sit and enjoy the view.
The Motel is located right on the Riverfront walk and so we eventually headed out for a walk up towards the Nambucca  RSL, which was only about five minutes away. We then decided to go and explore some of the local beaches and so headed back to the motel to pick up our car. We checked out the Captain Cook Lookout, near our hotel, and then went for a drive through Macksville to Scott’s Head.
After that it was back home to the motel for a quick rest before heading back onto the Riverwalk to head in the other direction towards our dinner venue.
The walk down to our dinner venue, V-Wall Tavern, took about 10 minutes and was a pretty walk along the river towards the ocean and, at times, meandered out through the mangroves. The Tavern offered basic club-food type fare but came with a great view out across the river and ocean. This area might be rather quiet but would be a photographers dream as it is just so, so pretty.
I have this metric I use for accommodation and that is ‘whether Susan Scarf could stay there or not’. I have also come up with another metric this time of whether we could live in a place permanently. Just to let you know, Susan Scarf would definitely not stay at this River View Boutique motel.
In terms of the livability metric, we have enjoyed visiting all of our destinations BUT could only live at Noosa and Byron Bay. We could not live at Port Macquarie, Ballina, Nambucca Heads or Scott’s Head or even Lennox head for that matter.
We plan to get up and out on the road early tomorrow morning for the trip home to Bondi.
