Ulverstone: Fri 20th March – Mon 23rd March
Fri 20th March & Sat 21st March
Mark and I caught up with Judy at the airport for the trip down to Tasmania, and our first stop at Ulverstone, where we were staying with Gordon and Judy at their house. Our flight didn’t land until almost 5pm and then it was a 90 minute drive across to Ulverstone so we were a bit weary by the time we arrived. We were glad to get out of the car, none more so than Judy as she was squashed in the back with Dagwood almost in her face for the entire journey. Thankfully, Gordon had a wonderful meal prepared for us on our arrival and we had a great night dining, catching up and drinking some nice wine.
We woke on Saturday morning to the most glorious sunshine and Mark and I took the opportunity to have a walk around Ulverstone and along the River Leven. Our main activity for the day was a journey out to Liffey and to walk the Liffey Falls Trail. It was about a 90 minute drive out to the Falls and then to walk the track, from the top to the bottom, is also about 90 minutes. Judy and I only did a part of the track whereas Mark and Gordon did the full descent. We had a picnic lunch at the end and then stopped off at Deloraine, for a short walk, on our way home.
Our dinner for the evening was at a restaurant in Devonport called Taste, by Bold Cuisine, and this was amazing. It is only a very small venue, probably seating no more than about 20, and they have a set menu of either three courses or you could take the degustation 7 course option. Gordon had been here many times before with work colleagues and he strongly recommended the seven course option and so that is what we took. The food was sensational and I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are ever in Devonport. But you must book well ahead as it is very popular. It was a lovely way to finish off our first full day in Tasmania.
Sun 22nd March
The forecast had been for fine weather but we woke to an overcast morning. Mark went for a bike ride and I had a walk and we both caught up at Thirty Three Cups again for a coffee.
The forecast for rain had us revise our plan for the day and we ended up going for a short drive, about 20 minutes, out to Penguin where we did a bit of exploring and checked out the markets. We then went for a further drive out to Table Cape and had another short walk out to the Lighthouse. It was then back home for a night of dining in and we had a lovely barbecue meal for our final night with Gordon and Judy.
This whole north-west shelf of Tasmania is a beautiful part of the world and I would highly recommend you visit. Ulverstone is a nice place to stay but so is Penguin and I would highly recommend a visit to this region. I have linked an Ulverstone accommodation option in the photos below but there is also Novo Luxury apartment in Penguin.
