Accommodation: The Square Hotel booked through Booking.com.

Fri 19th June

It was an early start for us today with a 5 am wake up and 5.30 am departure from our hotel in Milan. It had been a fairly unpleasant night as the a/c in our room just wasn’t effective against the unrelenting heat. Overnight temperatures currently weren’t dropping below 24 degrees and, then, only for about an hour before climbing again. We weren’t too sad to be leaving Milan as it was 24 degrees as we left the hotel and it felt hot and muggy already yet the sun had barely made an appearance. Mark yesterday commented that some of these places in Europe will soon be uninhabitable if climate change keeps progressing at this rate. It was only the start of the summer here yet the temperatures were already at scorching levels.

We had to return the car before heading to the airport and this was complicated by the fact Mark had to pack his bike up once we offloaded the car as the packed bike would not fit into our sedan. It was quite amusing though as the older Italian guy, who was waiting to take us to the airport stared on, quite incredulously, as Mark removed the deconstructed bike plus the bike bag and all our luggage and then began, in the car park, to pack the bike away. He gave up snorting though, and passing me conspiratorial eye rolls, and ended up helping Mark pack the bike such that it was a team effort by the end.

Our flight to Copenhagen was uneventful and we made it to our hotel by 1 pm but our room wasn’t ready so we dropped our luggage and went for a walk. We ventured down to the touristy Nyhavn port area where we had a leisurely but light lunch, as we had an early dinner booked. Our room was ready once we retuned by 3 pm so we spent the next couple of hours sorting clothing and our luggage for our return flight into the cold of Sydney.

Dinner tonight was back at Vaekst where we had been twice before and absolutely loved it both times. It was just as wonderful again this time and we were glad we had booked. The tasting menu was again a wonderful feast of textures and flavours and what we’d highly recommend. We drifted home after dinner and marvelled how it was seemingly broad daylight at almost 8.30 pm. It’s such a different experience in this part of the globe.

We had just the overnight stay in our hotel but it was a lovely place, good value and in a great location, being close to all the tourist attractions and to Vaekst restaurant, so I would highly recommend this hotel if you were ever staying in Copenhagen. This is the final blog in this series as we head back to Sydney tomorrow morning. Until next time, adios!
